Good morning! Two bits of housekeeping before we start.
A friendly reminder that 5GT is for paid subscribers only for 24 hours. It’s only fair you get a head start as a thank you for subscribing. If you would like to join us to view today’s newsletter….today, here is a link to do so.
If you happen to be in New York on Oct. 14th, I’m hosting a panel discussion for Me+Em to celebrate the launch of their Substack. It will be all about the busy-ness of building a business, working motherhood and what else…style. If you’d like to join us, info and tickets are here. It’s free but space is limited, hence the need to RSVP. There will be coffee. :)
Onto the main event now:
I’m puffy with jet lag and hitting the streets here in Paris to observe what people are wearing, what people are actually buying and figuring out the next trends we will care about. More on that next weekend in my seasonal trend report. Until then, I’m feeling a bit sporty. I think it is a bit of an extension from last week’s newsletter (I didn’t realize it was going to be so controversial, sorry about that!!) and the slow fading of sneakers from the fashion-first vocabulary. The thing is, no one is going to totally give up comfort. We are just going to get creative and find other ways to maintain our easy in mobility.
This is the time of year when I really want to wear all my nice clothes. I have places to be and the weather is finally cooling to fashion-friendly temperatures. It’s easy to get dressed in Paris, no one looks at you wondering what the occasion is. But New York is a more inherently casual place, (not compared to LA, it’s all relative, I know.) For day to day, people who are not going into a formal office are generally not wearing their dry clean only. But if we are giving up sneakers, then we are going to want to find other ways to balance out (or tone down) our outfits. Enter, the sporty things I’m leaning toward to give a little flair to my fun skirts, pretty tops and non-sneakers (ie loafers, boots, mary janes.)
1. The Track Pant
The other night, while in a deep, masochistic, revenge bedtime hole, I decided to make a fall moodboard to try to process what it is I’m really going to want to wear on and/or buy on this current trip abroad. I had not done this for years but it was pretty fun at 11:30pm when I knew I should have been clocking some beauty sleep. The best thing that came out of it was actually NOT buying something pictured but using it as a guide to find the things that work just as well if not better. It also definitely helped determine what one or two pieces I wanted to commit to vs. what I want to use as a styling guide.
